CHOOSING THE NEXT SCHOOL
The beauty of independent education is that parents can choose to which school their son or daughter wishes to transfer. We always like to help parents in their choice and the Headmaster is always happy to meet individually with any parents to discuss their options. A good age to start thinking about the next school is around 9 or 10 years, when all options will still be available. I list below a simple guide to the schools that most of our pupils transfer, which I hope may be of help in your preliminary thinking.
Day Schools:
There are six Headmasters Conference Schools locally:
Caterham School, Caterham.
Age range 3 - 18 Pupils: 1100 Day School (with 200 Boarders) Co-educational.
Normal entry point at 13+. Candidates for 13+ are currently required to pass a preliminary test at 13+ (January) in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
City of London Freemen's School, Ashtead.
Age range 7 - 18 Pupils: 843 Day School Co-educational.
Normal entry points 7+ and 13+. Candidates for 13+ are currently required to pass a preliminary test at 11+ in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
Epsom College, Epsom.
Age range 13 - 18 Pupils: 704 Day and weekly boarding Co-educational.
Entry point 13+ by Common Entrance or Scholarship.
Reigate Grammar School, Reigate.
Age range 11 - 18 Pupils: 880 Day School Co-educational.
Normal entry points 11+ and 13+, both examinations are in English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Interview. Our boys transfer at both ages and it is perhaps appropriate to say that they are two myths surrounding entry, both of which are unfounded. Firstly, that it is easier to gain entry at 11+. Our experience has shows that this is not the case, and the second is that the school is considering stopping entry at 13 but this is absolutely not the case.
St. John's School, Leatherhead.
Age range 13 - 18 Pupils 442 Day and weekly boarding Co-educational
Entry at 13+ by Common Entrance or Scholarship. Currently St. John's operate a preliminary test midway through Form 4 (Year 6). This test is a computerised Reasoning Test; the pupils will also sit through a group interview.
Whitgift School, Croydon.
Age Range 10 - 18 Pupils 1180 Day School Boys only.
Entry at 10+, 11+ and 13+. Entrance tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning.
Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools (SHMIS)
Box Hill School, Mickleham.
Age range 11 - 18 Pupils 350 Day and Weekly Boarding Co-educational
Entry by assessment in English and Mathematics plus interview in the Autumn Term of the final year. Boys then sit Common Entrance for setting only.
Ewell Castle School, Ewell
Age range 11 - 18 Pupils 512 Day School Boys only.
Entry by interview and predicted Common Entrance results.
Boarding Schools
A small number of our pupils opt for boarding schools, generally in Kent, Surrey and Sussex including Tonbridge, Eastbourne College, Lancing College, Brighton College, Ardingly College, Cranleigh School, Charterhouse, Seaford College.
Occasionally, pupils transfer further west to Eton College, Marlborough and Winchester.
