French, Spanish & Mandarin

Our youngest learners in Nursery (Oaks) enjoy a weekly French lesson with Mrs Stubberfield, where they discover new words and sounds through stories, music, games and imaginative play. These engaging sessions spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage children to explore the wider world.

Children in Reception build on these foundations in their weekly French lessons. Activities are themed around familiar and exciting topics, such as French food and pirates, helping children to extend their vocabulary and begin using simple words and phrases with increasing confidence.

In Years 1 and 2, children learn both French and Spanish in alternate half terms. Lessons continue to be themed around engaging topics, with a focus on listening and speaking, alongside the gradual introduction of writing skills.

In Years 3 and 4, children have weekly French and Spanish lessons, developing their cultural awareness alongside vocabulary, pronunciation and conversational skills in both languages. Mandarin Club is also available during lunchtime, offering a fun introduction to an additional language and culture. Through games, songs, storytelling, crafts and interactive activities, children learn simple greetings, numbers and everyday words while discovering Chinese festivals, traditions and customs. The club sparks curiosity, builds confidence and provides a gentle introduction to Mandarin before formal lessons begin in Year 5. 

Spanish Club is available to all children from Year 3 upwards as part of our after-school clubs programme.

In Years 5 and 6, children study both Mandarin and French as part of their weekly timetable. Through expert teaching, they develop the confidence to introduce themselves, talk about their family, hobbies, dates and festivals, ask and answer simple questions, and recognise and write a selection of Chinese characters. They develop accurate pronunciation through Pinyin, learn to distinguish the four tones and gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture through activities such as calligraphy, traditional celebrations and the exploration of customs and traditions.

Language learning culminates in a Year 6 residential trip to France, where children experience French language and culture first-hand. It is a much-anticipated experience and a treasured highlight of many children's time at Chinthurst.

Spanish Club is available to all children from Year 3 upwards as part of our after-school clubs programme.
