Sport

The happiest childhood memories are often made through sport - scoring a first goal, swimming a first length, crossing a finish line or hearing teammates cheer from the sidelines. Those moments spark confidence, create friendships and inspire a lifelong love of being active.

Sport at Chinthurst is about so much more than winning matches. It builds resilience, teamwork and determination while helping children develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. Whether taking their first catch, representing the school in a fixture or discovering a new favourite sport, children are encouraged to participate, challenge themselves and enjoy being active.

We are proud to have been named Independent School of the Year for Sporting Achievement, recognising our innovative and inclusive approach to physical education and games.

Inclusive Sport for Every Child

In Upper School, children choose which sports they would like to play each term, free from traditional gender expectations. Boys and girls train, compete and succeed together, supporting one another as teammates and developing mutual respect on and off the field. It is not unusual to see boys choosing hockey or girls excelling in rugby because, at Chinthurst, children play the sports they enjoy.

This pioneering approach has transformed participation, enthusiasm and confidence, ensuring children take part because they genuinely want to, not because they feel they should.

A Broad and Balanced Sports Curriculum

From Nursery onwards, children develop the fundamental movement skills that provide the foundations for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

Children in Reception to Year 2 enjoy a weekly PE lesson, double Games lesson and swimming lesson in our onsite pool. They develop coordination, balance and agility through gymnastics, athletics, invasion games and ball skills, building confidence as they learn to move, play and work together.

As children progress into Upper School, Years 3 to 6 benefit from two double Games lessons and one PE lesson each week. In Games, children enjoy competitive team sports including football, netball, rugby, hockey and cricket, developing tactical understanding, teamwork and match play. PE lessons complement this by focusing on movement, fitness and individual skill development through activities such as athletics, basketball, gymnastics and swimming. Every lesson combines expert coaching with opportunities to practise, play and challenge themselves, ensuring all children are supported to achieve their personal best.

Through the PE curriculum, pupils gain a broad range of physical skills and this supports their physical and mental health well

Competition That Builds Character

Competitive sport is an important part of life at Chinthurst, helping children develop resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship in a supportive environment.

All Upper School children represent the school in fixtures throughout the year, with multiple teams wherever possible to ensure every child has the opportunity to play. Our focus is not simply on results but on effort, progress and personal achievement. Every match is an opportunity to learn, build confidence and celebrate success together.

Discovering New Passions

We believe children are more likely to enjoy an active lifestyle when they have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of sports and activities.

Our annual Multi-Sport Week introduces exciting experiences such as Ultimate Frisbee, archery, golf, pickleball and orienteering, while visiting athletes and specialist coaches inspire children through workshops and challenges. Children can continue to develop their interests through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs, including tennis, cross country, taekwondo, yoga, Functional Fit Club and seasonal sports clubs, giving them the opportunity to stay active, build confidence and discover new passions beyond the curriculum.

Specialist Cricket Academy

For children with a passion for cricket, our onsite Cricket Academy provides exceptional opportunities to develop their game. Led by Mike Jacobs, one of the Lead Coaches for the Surrey Boys Cricket Early Engagement Talent Pathway, the academy offers specialist coaching throughout the year during lunchtimes and after school. Whether children are picking up a bat for the first time or aspiring to play at a higher level, they receive expert coaching in a supportive environment, helping them build confidence, refine their technique and fulfil their potential.

Our cricket programme is further enhanced through our partnership with former England international and 2019 Cricket World Cup winner Jason Roy, who works with the RGS family of schools as Cricket Consultant. Through inspirational visits and his work with the Sports Department across the RGS family of schools, children gain valuable insight into elite sport while learning the resilience, teamwork and dedication needed to perform at the highest level.
