Opening in September 2026, our brand-new Creative Arts Building will provide an inspiring new home for Art and Design Technology at Chinthurst. At its heart will be a vibrant, purpose-designed studio where creativity, imagination and innovation thrive every day.
Nurturing Artistic Talent
Our specialist Art teacher, Mrs Lyth, is a practising artist whose passion for painting, drawing and making shines through in every lesson. Step into the Art and DT Room and you will find a busy, welcoming environment where ideas are encouraged, creativity is celebrated and every child is given the confidence to explore, experiment and have a go.
Hands-On Exploration
Art at Chinthurst is wonderfully hands-on. We believe that creativity flourishes when children are given the freedom to experiment, take risks and learn through doing. Through a broad and varied curriculum, children explore a wide range of artistic techniques, from drawing and painting to printmaking, ceramics and sculpture. Whether they are creating vibrant Gelli prints, carving lino designs or discovering the magic of a monoprint reveal, there is always a sense of excitement and achievement.
Working with clay is a particular favourite. Children love the tactile experience of shaping, moulding and bringing their ideas to life, creating everything from animals and imaginative characters to decorative keepsakes. While every project is unique, our playful sloth toy is always one of the most popular creations.
Progression and Recognition
As children progress through the school, they steadily build their artistic knowledge and skills. They learn to observe carefully, experiment with colour and develop increasingly sophisticated drawing and painting techniques. By Year 6, they are ready to embark on their self-portrait project - a much-loved Chinthurst tradition. These remarkable artworks are always a highlight, showcasing not only technical skill but also personality, creativity and individuality. Each portrait is unique, reflecting the confidence and artistic journey of the child who created it.
The quality of our children's artwork has also been recognised beyond the school. We regularly submit pieces to the prestigious Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show, and in 2022 Chinthurst was delighted to be named a finalist, celebrating the creativity and talent of our young artists.
Design Technology
Our creative approach extends naturally into Design Technology, where children are encouraged to think, design, build and innovate. Using a variety of safe materials and tools, they transform ideas into reality through exciting projects that spark their imagination. Children have created everything from intricate wildlife models and sparkling sea creatures to an impressive collection of Star Wars-inspired spacecraft.
Cookery Skills
Cookery is another favourite part of the curriculum. Children love preparing delicious dishes while developing practical life skills, learning about healthy eating and discovering the joy of sharing food with others. From homemade sushi to freshly baked pizzas and everything in between, these sessions are always a highlight.
Celebrating Our Creativity
One of the most striking things about Chinthurst is the artwork that fills our buildings. Every corridor, classroom and shared space tells a story, showcasing the imagination, talent and achievements of our children. Visitors often comment on the exceptional quality and variety of the work on display - a testament to the enthusiasm, skill and artistic spirit that flourish within our school community.
