Last week’s church assembly began with our new music prefect introducing this week’s soloists. The Chinthurst community was treated to wonderful violin and piano performances, setting a lovely atmosphere for the morning.

Following this, Year 2 began their assembly and shared their learning through a performance about the Great Fire of London, taking the audience on a journey back to the year 1666.

The children explained how they had spent the half term becoming historians, writers and artists while learning about one of London’s most famous events.

Through storytelling and plenty of humour, 2H painted a vivid picture of life in 17th-century London. They described wooden houses packed tightly together, open fires used for cooking, and candlelight illuminating homes - all ingredients for disaster.

The children explained how people fought the fire using leather buckets, axes and fire hooks, as fire engines did not yet exist. Buckets were passed along a human chain, and the children sang London’s Burning together.

After four days, the fire was finally extinguished, but not before most of the old city had been destroyed. The assembly ended on a thoughtful note, with the children explaining how London changed as a result. Buildings were rebuilt in brick, streets became wider and the city was made safer for everyone.

It was a wonderful assembly that showcased Year 2’s learning, confidence and great sense of humour.
