To mark International Women’s Day, Year 6 visited Epsom Downs Racecourse, taking time to reflect on the courage and determination of Emily Davison.

Over a century ago, Emily made history at this very location, sacrificing her life in the fight for women’s rights. Standing on the Downs, the children paused to remember her bravery and discussed the impact of the suffragette movement, as well as the progress that has been made since. It was an opportunity to reflect on the freedoms they enjoy today and to consider how they, too, can help create positive change in the world.

Inspired by what they had learned, a group of Year 6 children later voluntarily wrote a letter to the Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse. In the letter, they explain why they believe Emily Davison’s bravery deserves a more prominent memorial than the current plaque on the Downs. The children suggest that a larger tribute would better recognise her sacrifice and the significance of the suffragette movement in securing women’s rights.

They also highlight the possibility of community fundraising to support such a memorial and suggest that it could also acknowledge the horse that died during the historic event.

The letter has been signed by both children and staff, demonstrating the shared respect within the school community for Emily Davison’s legacy and the importance of remembering those who helped shape a more equal society.
