Year 2 enjoyed a memorable and educational visit to RHS Garden Wisley, where they spent the day exploring the world of plants, wildlife and different climates through a range of exciting hands-on activities.

The day began with an engaging workshop all about plants, how they grow and the important role pollination plays in nature. Using their senses, the children explored a variety of plants and flowers by listening, smelling and touching them. They were especially fascinated to learn how plants can be cloned by taking cuttings and replanting them to grow new roots. Each child carefully created their own cutting to take home and nurture.

After lunch, the children ventured into the spectacular glasshouse, where they completed a treasure hunt linked to their geographical learning. As they explored, they identified different climates from around the world and discovered the wide range of plants that thrive in each environment. Highlights included spotting giant leaves larger than a person and smelling the unusual scents produced by orchids, some wonderfully sweet like chocolate and others far less appealing!

The children also learnt about the largest tree at Wisley, which originated from California, USA, and enjoyed spotting wildlife around the gardens, including pheasants and a particularly cheeky duck who was keen to join them for lunch. Using a bird song app, the children listened carefully and identified a variety of birds during their walk around the grounds.

The visit ended with time in the adventure play area, where the children explored sand and water play and worked together to help Mrs Monckton build a den.

Throughout the day, the children were a credit to the school and received several compliments from members of the public, who praised their enthusiasm, excellent manners and engagement in their learning. It was a truly wonderful experience for all, with many tired but happy faces on the coach journey home.
