Last week marked an unforgettable day for Year 6 as they stepped into the enchanting world of witchcraft and wizardry. In an extraordinary introduction to their new Harry Potter topic in English, they were whisked away into the realm of magic kicking off with the awe-inspiring Hoghurst House Sorting Ceremony.

As the children entered the Sports Hall, they were greeted with a scene straight out of the majestic story. The hall had been transformed into the Great Hall of “Hoghurst”, featuring a candlelit corridor to lead them towards the sorting hat which would place the children into one of four houses: Grimblehawk, Thorfinn, Vervain, and Balthasar.

Guided by the eccentric duo of Professor Dumbeadledor and Professor Gilmoregagall, the children eagerly awaited their turn to be sorted into their respective Houses. With bated breath, they listened as their names were called, and one by one, they were initiated into their new Houses, bequeathed with the iconic wizard's hat. From special dances to imaginary candle-dodging, the hall echoed with laughter as the children followed the instructions of their professors, revelling in their newfound magical identities.

After the ceremony, a more serious message followed as Mr Beadle and Miss Gilmore shed their whimsical personas to impart a crucial lesson. The children learnt that their House assignments are not merely for show but will define their journey for the remainder of the term. Working together as a team, the children will strive to earn valuable Hoghurst points through excellence, be it academic achievement, teamwork or acts of kindness. However, they also discovered that these points will be tricky to earn but can be swiftly lost setting the bar of expectation. The allure of a coveted prize awaits the winning House at the end of the term, igniting a competitive spirit tempered by the values of cooperation and camaraderie. Year 6 will take a deeper look at their House identities, exploring the origins and designing logos, mottos and crest animals whilst embracing their unique House ethos.

Beyond all the magic and mystery, the underlying goal of the Hoghurst House Sorting Ceremony was clear - to prepare Year 6 for the challenges that lay ahead as they venture to senior school in September. Through teamwork, collaboration, and acts of kindness, they will not only earn points but also forge new bonds and skills that will last far beyond their days at Chinthurst. Year 6 left The Great Hall of Hoghurst brimming with excitement and anticipation, ready to embark on a journey where the magic of learning and friendship will light their way!
