Great Big Green Week got underway on Monday with a school assembly led by Mrs Higginbotham, who encouraged the children to think about the importance of protecting the planet.

The assembly explored why Great Big Green Week is celebrated and highlighted the importance of taking action to tackle climate change and protect nature. Mrs Higginbotham explained that while many positive steps are already being taken around the world, there is still much more that can be done. She reminded the children that the week provides an opportunity for communities to come together, demonstrate their care for the environment and make a positive difference.

The children impressed everyone with their enthusiasm and knowledge throughout the assembly. They confidently shared their understanding of climate change and explained that greenhouse gases are causing the earth's temperature to rise.

Mrs Higginbotham discussed some of the causes of climate change, including the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and certain farming practices. The children also demonstrated their awareness of the effects of climate change, noting that sea levels are rising, trees are being cut down and waste levels are increasing.

The focus then turned to the actions that people can take to help. The children suggested a range of practical ways to reduce their impact on the environment, including recycling, reusing materials, reducing plastic use, saving energy, planting trees and protecting natural habitats.

Mrs Higginbotham encouraged everyone to think about the small changes they could make in their daily lives, such as walking to school where possible, turning off lights when leaving a room and picking up litter. She reminded the children that every action counts and that working together can make a significant difference.

The assembly provided an inspiring start to Great Big Green Week, encouraging the children to celebrate the positive steps already being taken while continuing to work together to protect the planet for future generations.
