Year 6 recently returned from an unforgettable week in Normandy, where they enjoyed a wonderful blend of adventure, language learning and cultural experiences.

Our journey began with a ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Ouistreham. The excitement was palpable as the children settled into the voyage, making the most of the onboard entertainment, enjoying time on deck and, of course, meeting the ever-popular Pierre le Bear.

After arriving late in the evening, we were welcomed to the beautiful Château, set within extensive woodland grounds. Throughout the week, the children were fully immersed in French, with all activities led by native French-speaking staff. The children approached every challenge with enthusiasm, demonstrating resilience, confidence and a willingness to embrace new experiences.

The programme offered something for everyone. The children tested their teamwork and determination on the assault course, developed their navigation skills during orienteering, enjoyed canoeing on the lake and tried their hand at traditional breadmaking. Aeroball proved as popular as ever, while the evening activities provided plenty of opportunities to practise French in a fun environment.

A particular highlight was our excursion to Mont Saint-Michel. Guided across the bay by an expert, the children experienced the unique landscape firsthand, exploring the tidal flats barefoot and learning about the area's fascinating natural features. After a picnic with spectacular views of the mount, we explored the historic site itself, discovering its rich history before enjoying a little time to browse the local shops.

Back at the château, one evening was dedicated to a vibrant French-themed celebration. The children arrived in an array of imaginative costumes inspired by French culture and landmarks, bringing colour and creativity to the occasion. A delicious French dinner followed, featuring a variety of regional specialities, before the children worked together to complete a treasure hunt conducted entirely in French.

As the week progressed, the children continued to throw themselves into every opportunity, including water-based activities around the château grounds, where avoiding the resident ‘crocodiles’ became an entertaining challenge. The final evening brought everyone together for a talent show, with performances ranging from music and magic to comedy and drama, showcasing the confidence and creativity that had flourished throughout the week.

Before beginning our journey home, we visited Arromanches and the 360° cinema, where a powerful film brought the events of D-Day vividly to life. The experience provided a meaningful opportunity for reflection and helped deepen the children's understanding of this significant chapter in history.

The residential was about far more than learning French. It encouraged the children to become more independent, strengthen friendships, support one another and develop the confidence to step beyond their comfort zones. It was a week filled with memorable experiences and achievements, and one that Year 6 will undoubtedly remember for many years to come.
