Year 3–6 (Upper School)

Year 3 marks an exciting step into our Upper School and Key Stage 2. Alongside greater independence and higher expectations, children continue to enjoy a curriculum filled with creativity, exploration and fun. They begin representing the school in sports fixtures, sing in one of our Upper School choirs and take a more active role within the House system, competing for honours in events such as the Performing Arts Cup. Trips, visiting workshops and practical learning experiences help bring subjects to life and inspire curiosity.

As confidence grows, Year 4 children are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning and embrace new challenges. They enjoy their first overnight residential adventure, curriculum-enhancing trips such as the Living Rainforest and an increasing range of opportunities to contribute to school life. Families also begin to explore senior school pathways through information events and learn more about the Early Offer process to our senior schools, helping them to plan confidently for the future.

Year 5 is a year of growing maturity and responsibility. Children enjoy an exciting two-night residential packed with outdoor challenges, teamwork and problem-solving activities, alongside visits such as the Science Observatory. They become trained Peer Mediators, supporting younger children and promoting kindness and friendship across the school. By Year 5, children have either received an Early Offer to Reigate Grammar School or RGS Surrey Hills, or are following our tailored 11+ programme led by Mr Beadle, giving them clarity and confidence as they prepare for senior school.

By Year 6, children are confident, independent learners and positive role models for the rest of the school. Every child undertakes a position of responsibility during the year, whether as Head Boy or Head Girl, House Captain, Music Prefect or in another leadership role. They also complete training as Peer Mentors, developing their understanding of mental health, active listening and how to support others with empathy and care.

Year 6 children become young entrepreneurs through their business enterprise project, designing, producing and marketing their own products before selling them to raise money for charity. Their final year at Chinthurst is packed with memorable experiences, including the Year 6 Production, final self-portrait projects in art, a special Treat Day organised by Year 6 Class Reps, an end-of-year sleepover and their final Chinthurst adventure - a residential visit to Normandy, where they immerse themselves in French language and culture while developing independence, resilience and lasting memories with friends.

Children leave Chinthurst academically prepared, emotionally secure and ready to embrace senior school with confidence, kindness and enthusiasm.
