One day they might be planting flowers for pollinators, the next leading a recycling campaign, exploring woodland habitats or taking part in a national environmental initiative. Along the way, they discover that even the smallest actions can make a meaningful difference.
Through outdoor learning, our award-winning Eco-Schools programme and environmental themes woven throughout the curriculum, children develop a lifelong respect for nature, a sense of responsibility for the world around them and the confidence to become thoughtful global citizens.
Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction
We are proud to hold the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction, recognising our whole-school commitment to sustainability and environmental education.
During the assessment, Eco-Schools praised the impact of environmental learning at Chinthurst School. Following a whole-school survey, 75% of children said they are now committed to reducing their use of plastics, demonstrating the positive difference our work is making.
Our enthusiastic Eco Committee leads many of our environmental initiatives, giving children the opportunity to share ideas, organise projects and encourage sustainable habits across the school.
Sustainability in Action
Caring for the environment is part of everyday life at Chinthurst. Children recycle, take part in local litter picks, reduce waste, save energy and are encouraged to use reusable water bottles and lunch containers.
Our grounds provide rich opportunities to connect with nature through outdoor learning and biodiversity projects. Children help create habitats for wildlife, plant flowers and trees for pollinators and, from September 2026, will enjoy a new Lower School garden. Nursery (Acorns), Pre-Reception and Reception children also enjoy regular Woodland Learning afternoons in the local area, encouraging curiosity, resilience and an appreciation of the natural world from an early age.
Across the curriculum, sustainability is explored through science, geography and PSHE, where children investigate climate change, biodiversity, conservation and responsible living. They also learn about protecting oceans and rivers while discovering how caring for nature supports both the planet and our own wellbeing.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Children regularly take part in national environmental campaigns, including The Big Plastic Count, support organisations such as the WWF and Surrey Wildlife Trust, and celebrate environmental achievements in assemblies and newsletters. They also have the opportunity to complete Bikeability in Years 4 and 6, promoting safe, active and sustainable travel.
By giving children meaningful opportunities to care for the environment today, we are helping them grow into compassionate, responsible young people who are ready to make a positive difference tomorrow.
